Caring for quality Linens

Not many of us can claim any degree of expertise when it comes to linen. Most of us just allow our fine linen to be destroyed by neglect and misuse while others go to the other extreme and have them professionally cleaned. Since linens are so expensive, most of us get paranoid about spoiling them and just allow them to lie in our cupboards. Instead, if we can learn to care for our linens, we can use and enjoy them for years.

This is especially the case when it comes to older linens made from fine materials. Such linens are prone to damage from any number of sources and once destroyed they can never really be replaced. If you do not learn how to properly clean heirloom linens then you had better prepare yourself for the very real possibility that your neglect will most likely destroy the linen so that no one else can ever enjoy it again.

Old linens have an incomparable charm and beauty, and it would be a pity to keep them stored away. They lend a distinct character to the space. If you have inherited them, you would like to pass them on to your children in the same shape. So, it’s necessary to make that extra effort to maintain and clean your old linens.

Caring for quality linens means keeping a watchful eye out for dirt and the damage it can cause. Dirt can literally burrow down into the fibers and cause damage that is irreversible if it is allowed to set in. It is possible to safely remove this dirt by using a vacuum cleaner on the textile. For especially fragile linen, you may want to place a fiberglass screen over it first to help protect the fabric.

Whatever you do, it is important that you never store away linen that you know has become soiled. You must clean the linen prior to storing it as this will keep insects from damaging it as they are prone to searching out food and grease and destroying fine linen in the process.

While cleaning the linen you have to make sure that the color, strength, or shape of the fabric does not change. So, you can use water to clean cotton fabrics. Washing will help reduce acid build-up and make the fabric become more flexible in the process. You should not use water to clean wool or silk fabrics because water tends to weaken these fabrics making it harder to remove dirt.

You want to use a mild soap when cleaning fine linen as harsh chemicals will almost certainly cause damage. Plus, in order to avoid learning that the colors bleed the hard way, try dabbing a few drops of water in some obscure place on the linen and allowing it to dry to see if fading occurs. In all honesty, you probably want to avoid taking your fine linens to the dry cleaner. The high temperatures involved in the cleaning process can damage the fabric. Whatever you do, make sure to carefully clean and store your fine linens so that they can be enjoyed and treasured by future generations just as they have been enjoyed by you.
